D-808 a good , compact receiver
I liked this compact receiver very much . I subsequently bought one as a gift for my son, who also likes it. The sound fidelity is only fair, as expected for such a small unit, but the sensitivity and selectivity are excellent. It comes with no charger, but the old fashioned 5 volt charger from a former folding cell phone worked fine,. My son says it charges well from his computer, Over all: an excellent buy.

Good SSB Radio, but..........
I bought this radio mainly for its SSB capability and I was not disappointed. The one thing that did disappoint me was that shortly after using the radio, sparingly, I noticed the battery indicator always showed the battery was being charged while the radio was turned off or on. I reset the radio and also removed the battery for a day in hopes that it would correct itself. No luck. I know it's a small thing but it is still very annoying to me. I tried contacting XHDATA twice without a response.

Love This Radio
I didn't buy this radio for the shortwave and all of that stuff, I absolutely have no interest in far away listening stations. I bought it for it's great sensitivity on my local FM music stations and how clear and awesome it sounds. Compact yet sounds really good with an alarm and temperature feature which comes handy when you travel.

looks good but
I am not receiving many stations. Having same problem with handheld HAM radios so could be my location.

Love this radio!
The only complaint is the skimpy user manual, does not show how to manage memory storage.

AMAZING SHORTWAVE RADIO FOR THE PRICE!! Hope Amazon gets more soon!
AMAZING SHORTWAVE RADIO FOR THE PRICE!!Although Amazon has been out of these over a year I still want to give my review in case they are made available again.Prices fluctuate online, ($76 lowest today) from $76 - $200.This is the BEST SHORTWAVE w/SSB RADIO available when paying $150 or less, no close second IMHO. The long wire antenna that comes with it improves on the already great whip antenna SW reception. The sound quality is very good, the rechargeable batter lasts over 24 hours w/o plugging it in to recharge. It picks up stations NOT picked up by other (under $300) SW Radios at the same location; and this one has SSB!! FM & AM are also outstanding.I LOVE THIS LITTLE SSB SW RADIO!

Brilliant radio
This radio is exceptional. Sensitivity and selectivity are top notch. Look at the dozens of fantastic reviews on YouTube if you want proof of how great this radio actually is. The only things I'd wish for on future updates might be an antenna gain switch, a tone control, and a way to scroll through saved stations with the tuning knob. I purchased mine from another online store for $75 and it was money well spent for everything it does.

Good Radio But
I bought mine on another website. Over all the reception and features are good, but I wished the materials were of higher quality. The plastic area on the back where the antenna in screwed into is too weak and it broke after two days of use. Now the antenna come out of the radio enclosure. I contacted the sell to see if I can get a replacement and all I keep getting is the run around. I should have bought it on Amazon. Over the last 32 year I have had 5 different portable shortwave radio with only one that is not working properly as result of some of the capacitors failing with time. All 5 radios are still functioning like champs with their antenna just fine. Only this radio's plastic broke like a piece of cracker. XHDATA needs to improve its quality control department.Cheers!

A really capable radio.
I was looking for a radio and initially settled on the Tecsun PL-880 but after reading lots of reviews I decided to go for the PL-660 and then decided that it wasn't really what I wanted. Then I saw a link for the XHDATA D-808 and it seemed to fit better with what I was after and it was also better priced then the Tecsun models. Though there were no online reviews, I still treat myself to it.I'm glad I chose the radio. Sound quality is good on FM (not the best HI-FI sound but more then adequate for a small radio) and reception is good all round the house - I live in a bit of an electromagnetic deadspot and can only receive DAB if the radio is near a window. Some other FM receivers I have don't work well round the house. The D-808 is a good performer away from the window ledge. Listening to R4 a few minutes ago, it picked up the station clearly and also set the time according to the RDS signal. The reviewer that panned the D-808 for poor quality FM reception & lack of RDS must have got a 'Friday' model.Gone are the days when 'world receivers' had only a volume control and a tuning knob and the perhaps a tone control if you were really flash. All the modern radios now come with tiny buttons and lots of them and lots of functionality. Personally, I'd like the radio to be a little bit bigger and the buttons to be a little larger and perhaps the backlight to illuminate the buttons so I can see what I'm doing without having to put the room light on or turn the torch on if outside. The problem with all the buttons (and it's a criticism with all the modern radios, not just this one) is that they have multiple functions and features assigned to them. Learning your way round a keypad and the radios features takes time. I have had the radio for a week now and still have to grab the manual from time to time because I can't remember when a particular button works or what it's 'other' function is.I like the analogue volume control, the fine tuning knob is a bit confusing - it only works when using SSB - in other modes it functions the same as the main tuning dial but this is probably what you want. Fine tuning works well on the amateur bands with SSB enabled and using the bandwidth filter does help to isolate the signal. One gripe with the fine tune is that it doesn't reset when you change the frequency. If you are listening on 1.800Mhz and you turn the fine tune button it counts up or down on the display - 1800 stays the same but you get a sequence of numbers below it ( don't know what the numbers represent - it is some offset from the tuned frequency but the manual doesn't say if it's Hz, milliamps or budget deficits :-) ). If you tune +23 (for example) then turn the main tune button to 1.805MHz, then turn the fine tune button, it still shows +23, I would have expected it to go back to 0 so that we were effectively tuned to 1.805Mhz +0 not 1.805MHz + 23. Manually entering a new frequency doesn't reset the fine tune to 0. Turning the radio off and on doesn't reset the fine tune to 0. I can't find any way of resetting the fine tune to 0 other than turning the fine tune knob. The built-in telescopic antenna is not much good for short wave work indoors but works fine for FM. Outside it works fine, I live on the North East coast of England and the first signal I picked up when I walked outside was an Estonian amateur calling CQ on top-band. I was impressed - especially when you consider that I was using the telescopic antenna.I haven't tried the radio with a large external antenna just a 4m portable bit of wire hung outside the window. I was able to scan the bands OK and pick up some stations. The bands were quiet - I tried with my Eton E5 at the same time and there was nothing really going on. The radio did pick up a few SSB stations and also morse and I was able to copy them OK, it's not a full blown communications receiver but it performs very well in its own niche. The bandpass filters are easy to adjust and switching between sidebands is easy too, trying to tune an SSB station is a bit fiddly, get somewhere near with the main dial, choose the correct sideband and then fine tune with the fine tune button. It's definitely a radio I will carry with me on my travels and if I dropped this I'd buy another without hesitation.

( Meine Note: 1 ++ )

A little gem!!
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. This is a very good radio for the money.Excellent aircrafts reception, good squelch and clear audio, (my nearest airport is 30 miles away and is coming trough very clear), with extended aerial.Good FM mode with rds info.Short wave has ssb( usb/lsb), and tuning steps to resolve audio.I can receive a lot of stations using the enclosed wire aerial, will be trying another home made aerial soon. The display is very clear with a lot of info choice, frequency, time, alarm, squelch, signal strength, etc and it can be illuminated.Overall I’m very pleased with it.I will update this review once I have used it for a longer period.UpdateIncluded a video of a wefax reception and amateur hf contest .with a AN05 antenna at ground level. The more I use this radio the more I like it.

XHDATA D-808
Having read several reviews of this radio on the internet I had reasonable expectations from what is a very reasonably priced receiver £69 currently from Amazon. I am a licensed radio amateur and have "too many" radios according to my wife. Mediumwave coverage is excellent and the various band width filters help to cut down on interference from strong nearby stations. I compared reception of Manx Radio with that of the Eton E5 and found them very close but with the Eton losing out on selectivity. One review I read speaks of the agc being too fast on ssb thus the first half second of a message was lost, but on my radio this problem was not there so maybe the firmware has been improved upon. This radio's sensitivity on airband is remarkable and with a decent squelch control which, if properly adjusted, really works. Most of my listening on the radio has been done on the telescopic antenna and I spent a couple of happy hours listening to 160m Ham band and found the radio to be incredibly sensitive. I am delighted with this little radio and with it's rechargable battery included it is hard to see how they can produce such a quality item for such a decent price. Tuning across the bands does result in a noticeable muting (chuffing) sound but this is a minor point and doesn't detract from it's performance once you get used to how it works. Memory entry is a breeze and one of the easiest I have come across with 10 memories per page. Press and hold to enter a memory on your desired key number and press quickly to recall the memory. Press page and your desired page number on the keypad and then you have another 10 memories to fill using the above-mentioned method. All in all you won't find anything comparable in it's price bracket and, as a bonus, it will fit into most jacket pockets.

Great little radio but...
Very fast response from ordering to delivery. The radio itself is very good for its diminutive size. Technically it’s a DSP radio and I notice the excellent sensitivity and selectivity due to that chip. An excellent travel radio with RDS info on FM (something it’s competitors lack) with good audio from its small speaker but a great sound on headphones with stereo capability. The Air band is another distinct advantage over similar radios. Very good SW coverage and on MW this morning heard 1010WINS from New York with just the internal ferrite bar and I’m in Ireland! The radio loses a star, however, due to its dismal LW performance which, I’m sad to say, is the worst of any radio I’ve ever owned, can barely hear BBC R4 and RTE 252. I’m not going to return the radio because of this shortfall because almost everything else great about this radio outweighs it. I highly recommend this as a great little travel radio, handy for IDing stations on FM when abroad, but it’s first and foremost a SW radio with SSB (USB:LSB) and has an external jack for an active loop or use the long wire that comes with it. The manual is only so-so. For this price you get a whole lot of radio on all wavebands except LW. Enjoy!
